In 2021-2022, LHPUSD participated with nine other school districts across the country in a year long Rural School Design Program. Our core team met weekly and developed a current state blueprint of how our students and families experience our schools. We identified three "Leaps"  to move our school district forward:

  • Relevance
  • Community and Connection
  • Social Consciousness and Action

We identified Graduate Aims, or what our students will take with them beyond education, as  they leave our schools:

  • Intercultural Competence
  • Curiosity
  • Relationship Skills
  • Critical Thinking

This year, we are working through an implementation plan to achieve progress towards achieving our Leaps and Graduate Aims. Our staff is working with the San Mateo County Office of Education to learn about the 6 design principles of Place-Based Education. These design principles will become the foundation of providing relevant educational experiences and support our students to be aware of local and global community issues and empower them to active participants in the world around them.

6 Design Principles~

  • Community as Classroom
  • Learner-Centered
  • Inquiry-Based
  • Local to Global
  • Design Thinking
  • Interdisciplinary
