Measure R Progress Update: August 2026

Measure R projects continue moving forward across La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District, with an important design milestone reached at Pescadero Elementary School and new information helping shape long-term planning at Pescadero Middle/High School. At its August 13, 2026, meeting, the Board of Trustees received important updates on two major facilities efforts: the new Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten project at Pescadero Elementary School and the fault zone study at Pescadero Middle/High School.

Pescadero Elementary Preschool/TK/K Project Moves Into Design

Planning for the modernization of Pescadero Elementary School reached an important milestone this month. Following the Board’s June direction to proceed with a new Preschool/ TK/K Building, the Board approved Motive Studio to provide architectural and engineering services for the project.

The planned project includes one new Preschool classroom, and one new Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten classroom, ADA-related site improvements, a new age-appropriate play structure, and utility work needed to support the new classrooms in one new building.

The Board previously dedicated approximately $5.8 million toward Pescadero Elementary modernization efforts, including approximately $3.5 million for construction and $2.3 million for project development and other soft costs.

Motive Studio will now begin the architectural and engineering work needed to advance the project through the Department of the State Architect (DSA) approval process. The District is targeting an early fall 2026 DSA submission, with the goal of beginning construction in summer 2027.

Pescadero Middle/High School Fault Study

The Board also received an update on the fault zone study at Pescadero Middle/High School.

The investigation began this summer with exploratory trenching on the campus. A fault discovered in the first trench prompted the project team to conduct additional investigation to better understand geological conditions across the site.

The study has now provided the District with important information about fault activity and likely fault traces, as well as limited areas that may be available for potential future development.

The findings do not represent a final decision about the future of the campus. Instead, they provide critical information that will help guide the District’s next steps.

The District will now evaluate the findings in relation to student and staff safety, state requirements for modernization and new construction, legal and regulatory requirements, potential improvements that may be possible on the existing site, and eligibility for State Facility Program and state hardship funding.

Given the significance of this work for students, staff, families, and the broader Pescadero community, the District will continue to approach future decisions thoughtfully and transparently.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, the District will advance design and engineering for the Pescadero Elementary Preschool/TK/K project while continuing to evaluate the fault study findings, regulatory requirements, funding opportunities, and potential options for Pescadero Middle/High School.

The District will continue providing updates as both efforts move forward and remains committed to responsible stewardship of Measure R resources and thoughtful investments in safe, modern learning environments for current and future generations of students.
