Please see letter that was sent to families on August 9th, 2021. If you are interested in Independent Study, please contact your school office.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District will open with full-day, in-person learning for all grades on August 12. We are following all required public health protocols to maintain safe learning environments for students and staff.

Meanwhile, a new law about Independent Study in the 2021-22 school year (California Assembly Bill 130) also authorizes us to provide Independent Study for a student whose health would be put at risk by in-person instruction, as determined by the parent or guardian. Independent Study is voluntary.

Published on July 12th for school districts to process, this late-arriving legislation created a very tight timeline for us to plan and communicate options to parents and guardians. Parents choosing an Independent Study option have the right to request a conference meeting before enrollment to review the academic program delivery, student support, enrollment process, specific academic expectations, and withdrawal process.

Along with our program support opportunities, each Independent Study program will offer:

• Transitional kindergarten and grades 1 to 3, a plan to provide opportunities for daily synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year.

• For pupils in grades 4 to 8, a plan to provide opportunities for both daily live interaction and at least weekly synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year.

• For pupils in grades 9 to 12, inclusive, a plan to provide opportunities for at least weekly synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year.

• A plan to transition pupils whose families wish to return to in-person instruction from independent study within 5 days of a withdrawal request.

Parents with a child with an individualized educational program (IEP) may request a time to meet with the IEP team to discuss if the Independent Study option is an appropriate placement. Again, this notification is required by law. For more information, please contact your school principal to engage in an initial meeting to determine your student's eligibility if your family chooses Independent Study instead of in-person learning. Please know Independent Study is not the same as remote learning.

Sincerely,
